The result is semi-realistic because the lesson involves building the general shape and mapping the car texture. There's also a chapter on modeling a car. I didn't know that was possible, and it's not difficult. One of them is on creating undulating terrain inside Sketchup. There are many things new to me in this book. You can still use Photoshop but you'll have to be proficient enough to understand how you can workaround, for example on how you can create seamless textures, because all the steps are written for GIMP. The tutorials use GIMP, the Photoshop alternative, to edit pictures. Unity 3D is a huge file so you'll want to download it first while reading the first few chapters. In addition to Sketchup, the book introduces many free software that are to be downloaded and used for the tutorials. The guided exercises are all easy to follow along. Specifically for game design, it covers how textures are to be manipulated to get them looking good and still not be a drain on computing resources. The tutorials only cover the essential steps which focuses on finding textures, creating them, and mapping them onto the models. To get up to speed, you need basic Sketchup knowledge like modeling and moving things around. It's the setting for a first person shooter game, and it's going to be used as demo where you can walk around the town. The goal is to construct a small town on uneven terrain at the outskirts of a city. This is a beginner's guide that's made up of step-by-step tutorials that build on one another. This book shows that it can, and how you can do it. I like using Sketchup but I didn't know that it is good enough to be used for game design. It's about using Sketchup for game design. The good news is that Trimble still offers this version in an official capacity, although it's no longer receiving updates. The last version of SketchUp Make was released in 2017. When Trimble acquired SketchUp, it forked the product into several tiers, keeping the free desktop version around as "SketchUp Make." The SketchUp web app is decent and might be good enough for many people, but for a long time, the desktop version was completely free, too. If you want the latest full desktop app, you're looking at $300 a year for personal use. At the time of this writing, the only modern free version of SketchUp is a web app. SketchUp has changed hands a few times over the years, once having been owned by Google, and currently owned by a company called Trimble. Trimble even warns it might have security problems as it hasn't been updated since 2017. However, as of May 2022, the official SketchUp website is no longer offering the free version (SketchUp Make 2017) for download. This worked when we published it in 2021.
